Phil Badger's models...

Phil Badger's N Scale "Richmond"

Phil Badger's 1980's N scale (1:160) layout "Richmond" was a scale model of the New South Wales Government Railways terminus of the same name, west of Sydney. It astounded and delighted exhibition crowds, and was featured as a "Railway of the Month" in Continental Modeller. All of the rolling stock and locomotives are Phil's own work, as are the handbuilt track and scratchbuilt structures. When everybody else was saying only HO scale was really practical for modelling Australian railways, Phil was busy proving them wrong. (Photo by Ralph Cooke)

N scale NSW AD60 Beyer Garratt

This locomotive is probably Phil's masterpiece. It is one of a limited run of 1:160 scale ready-to-run models of the NSWGR AD60 class Beyer, Garratt 4-8-4+4-8-4 heavy freight locomotive. The model is built from Phil's own etchings, castings and turnings, and runs on a pair of self-designed, scratchbuilt chassis.

N scale NSWGR 38 Class

Another of Phil's RTR models, this one is also available in kit form from Phil's longstanding personal company, BadgerBits. The loco is an unstreamlined member of the 30-strong class of NSWGR C38 Pacifics. This 4-6-2 locomotive was regarded by many as the pinnacle of Australian steam loco design, and the first five were built in streamlined form. The remaining 25 had a more conventional appearance, as shown here. The model is built from Phil's etchings and castings, and runs on a MicroAce chassis. Phil has painted this one to represent the full glory of the NSW lined green passenger livery. (Phil Badger)

N Scale VR K Class

This photo is of a finished version of Phil Badger's most recent kit release, for the Victorian Railways K Class 4-6-0. The loco body and tender are polyurethane castings, detailed with brass lost-wax castings and etchings. It runs (like a Swiss watch) on a MicroAce chassis. It is finished in its everyday grubby working condition. (Phil Badger)

HO Scale NSW 16 Class

This photo shows some of the detail on Phil's scratchbuilt HO (1:87) scale NSW 16 Class 4-4-0 locomotive. Again, the etchings, turnings and construction are all Phil's own work. (Phil Badger)

On30 VR G Class Garratt

Proving his versatility, this is a built-up version of Phil's etched brass kit for the Victorian Railways G Class Garratt, in 1/4" (1:48) scale, also known as On30. The prototype was designed for the 2'6" gauge Government-owned lines which ran into the mountainous areas of Victoria, and a member of the class (G42) has recently been returned to steam on the Puffing Billy Railway.

Chris Klein's models...

7mm Scale Peckett 0-4-0ST

A 7mm scale Peckett 0-4-0ST of the former Swansea Harbour Trust built, painted and weathered by Chris Klein from the Agenoria kit. The prototype locomotive was later absorbed by the GWR and survived into the British Railways era as depicted by the model, which appeared in the May 2007 edition of the Railway Modeller. (Chris Klein)

7mm GWR 2021 PT

A 7mm scale ex-GWR 2021 Pannier Tank built by Chris Klein from the Zero Zephyr kit. The model featured in the April 2001 edition of the Railway Modeller. (Chris Klein)

7mm GWR Signal Box

Cwm Bach Signal Box. A standard GWR signal box scratchbuilt in 7mm scale for Chris Klein's proposed O Gauge South Wales colliery line. The model features in the February 2008 edition of the Railway Modeller. (Chris Klein)

4mm Manor on Abersoch

Hook Norton Manor crosses the Afon Soch with the up Cambrian Coast Express on Chris Klein's 4mm scale Abersoch Layout, depicting a fictitious extension of the Cambrian Railways coast line from Pwllheli in the 1950s-60s period. Abersoch and its sister station Boduan Junction have featured in many articles in the Railway Modeller since 1992. (Chris Klein)

4mm Dukedog at Abersoch

Abersoch again: Chris' kitbuilt 4mm scale ex-GWR Dukedog loco departs from Abersoch with an up local passenger. (Chris Klein)

Lindsay O'Reilly's models...

N Scale NSW Cattle Wagon

This N scale NSWGR CW 4-wheel cattle wagon was built from a Phil Badger 'BadgerBits' etched brass kit, and was Lindsay's first venture into N scale soldered kit building. The sides simply fold up from three layers of etching to produce the relief which is characteristic of these wagons - brilliant design! The wagon has a cast polyurethane roof and chassis. (Lindsay O'Reilly)

7mm S Wagon and Hunslet 0-6-0ST

The O Gauge (7mm/foot, 1:43 scale) wagon on the left is a New South Wales Government Railways (NSWGR) steel-bodied S wagon, built from a Gago Models kit. The Hunslet loco, named 'John Hunter', was built in a single day from the fabulous, and much-missed, 85A Models kit, and represents a loco owned by a fictitious NSW colliery. (Lindsay O'Reilly)

7mm Scale Coal Hopper

This model represents a four-wheel 'non-air' coal hopper owned by a fictitious colliery on the NSW Hunter Valley coal fields. At the height of the steam era there were over 12,000 of these wagons in use, ferrying coal to the port of Newcastle, and the BHP steelworks next to it. The scratchbuilt hopper rides on a modified Slater's chassis. (Lindsay O'Reilly)

7mm Scale Colliery Wagons

These two wagons represent colliery-owned vehicles. The flat wagon on the left is built on a Peco chassis, and represents a similar vehicle which ran on the Richmond Vale Railway. The one on the right is a straight build of the Slater's rectangular tank wagon, painted and weathered for its new Hunter Valley location. (Lindsay O'Reilly)

14mm scale Wagon

This wagon is a heavily modified Garden Railway Specialists three-plank wagon kit, intended for G scale (13.5mm/foot, 1:22.5 scale) but here built to 14mm scale, to run on 66mm gauge track. A new wooden body was constructed with interior detailing in styrene. The whitemetal chassis needed widening, with new axles turned from 1/4" stainless steel rod; the wheels were lathe-turned down to exact prototype dimensions by Ray Cross and Graham Holland. It is based on a Richmond Vale Railway 'D' wagon, and is BIG (as models go). (Lindsay O'Reilly)

Batlow Goods Shed

Not strictly a model... This drawing of Batlow Goods Shed was done by Lindsay for 7th Heaven, the magazine of the 7mm Ausmodellers Group. (Lindsay O'Reilly)
